Hamiza, who I personally referred to Great Heart, is a lady who lives with her husband and two daughters, one of them having disabilities. Her husband earns a little over RM1,300 a month while she stays at home to take care of their daughters.

Their lives didn’t always look like this. After a motorbike accident, her daughter suffered a serious head injury that impaired her thinking. With her daughter now having to study at a special needs school, she and Hamiza both stayed in the city while the rest of the family moved back to their hometown in Kedah due to the financial strain.

When I first met Hamiza, I thought that she was lazy because she had quit her job after the accident. However, after going grocery shopping with her and her daughter, I soon realised that taking care of her daughter was a full-time task. Hamiza’s daughter would often have lapses of memory, and would go missing during these shopping trips and be found under the cashier counters or standing around staring into the distance.

I was happy that Great Heart decided to help Hamiza and her family. With the RM300 given allowance for groceries, Hamiza spent every cent wisely, choosing only what she needed. I was so touched when they thanked me repeatedly every time I took them shopping at the end of the month.

Soon after, Hamiza decided to open a stall selling keropok with her husband, and plan to supply their keropok at other food stalls in the area to supplement the family’s living expenses while still having time to look after her daughters.

From this experience, I learned to always be grateful for what I have. We always complain about how we don’t live luxurious lives, but there are always people out there who have lived harder lives. Though life is hard, we should still move forward and be grateful for what we have!

The Silent Social Worker

When I graduated from Form Six, applying for higher education was a struggle due to my grades. My teachers gave me two options: to either spend a bomb on private education so that I could study what I wanted, or to choose a random subject at a public university and hope to get in. Against my parent’s wishes, I chose the second route, and felt torn when I was notified of my approval. While I was happy to save money on the tuition fee, I was worried about where the course would take me.

Due to the nature of my course, I learnt a lot on social work. As my lecturers thought us about how our country’s economy influenced the different social classes in Malaysia, I couldn’t help but wonder- was there no channel where I could help the underprivileged? When I brought my questions to my peers, many told me to get my head out of the clouds as I didn’t even have enough to support myself, much less anyone else. However, I wasn’t surprised at this response as social work is not the norm in Malaysia. Just because it wasn’t, though, did that mean it had to fall to the wayside? The attitude that most people have towards charity work is that it is a meaningless job that doesn’t pay. Many believe that it brings no value to modern society.

Despite this, nothing could stop me from walking towards social work. As I struggled to decide where to do my internship at, my lecture told me about Great Heart Charity Association, where my seniors had interned at before. Unlike other organisations, Great Heart focuses on helping those who live in poverty. Their services support single-parent families, elderly folk who live alone, the disabled and those stricken with chronic illness. The process of assessing those who need assistance isn’t too complicated, and those who are found eligible receive aid in terms of dialysis treatments, food and healthcare.

What I struggled with the most was with the beneficiaries themselves. More than once I have found discrepancies in what the beneficiaries of our aid say and what their condition actually is. Along with them being eligible for government aid and cases which involve sudden death, I found myself not being able to close cases due to the issues that would arise all of a sudden.

Great Heart focuses on cases in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, which is very modern but also very human. Those we assess are also very interesting. Some are warm and inviting, offering snacks when we visit, and us having to decline due to their circumstances. Others are calculative, refusing us entry into their home and get very emotional. Many call daily asking if their aid has been given, and tell us that they’re simply awaiting death when the answer is ‘not yet’. Some people are angry when we are unable to provide housing for them, and for others, our aid is their last resort before they decide to borrow money from loan sharks.

What’s common, though, with all these cases, is that they will do anything to survive their harsh environment.

During my internship, I was mostly involved with meeting our beneficiaries, conducting assessments, making records, following up with these cases along with supplying aid. What I worried about the most was that one of the beneficiaries under me would pass on before I could get them the health they did. I wouldn’t be able to live with the regret.

In the six months that I spent with Great Heart, I got to witness the ups and downs of social work, who even gave up their weekends to meet with the beneficiaries; who got to see the worst of society and yet did not give up in their work. Even though I have left to continue on with my studies, I will never forget the work that Great Heart charity has done, and will continue doing.

This organisation is the reason I have become the person I am today. I have learned everything that I needed to learn -and more- from this wonderful job. This organisation gave me the space to grow, allowed me to make my own decisions, and learn from my mistakes. Through this, I have faith in my abilities.

Helping others will always be my life’s biggest satisfaction. Seeing them happy makes me happy. I’d like to thank Great Heart Charity for the opportunity to intern here and get a priceless experience. As I move on to a different world with different opportunities, I can only say that I would never have been able to do it if I hadn’t got my first opportunity here.

I will always cherish what this organisation has given me. I wish Great Heart success and that they never stop helping others. Thank you Great Heart!

Enriching Journey

Being an intern at Great Heart Charity Association was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. With GHCA, I have discovered the real side of Malaysia where people are nice, helpful and caring.

6 weeks ago, I was just a frightened intern who kept thinking of going back home immediately. But then came GHCA, welcoming me like a family member, helping me grow into a better person.

I have learned a different way of volunteering during this enriching journey. Going for assessments and groceries shopping for underprivileged families was a new thing for me, but Great Heart leaders has managed to make the process easier for me to go through.

Today, I want to thank all GHCA members for always giving me both the help and support. I’m certainly going to miss the time spent in Malaysia but I will always keep good memories of it.

Life Changing Experience

This whole journey was a life changing experience, whereby I experienced ups and downs while learning from it a lot.

My first few days in Malaysia weren’t as good as I expected when I arrived here. I was deeply worried that my whole stay is going to be like that.

But everything changed after I met Great Heart members at Great Heart Community Centre. We met those who cared for us and helped us to overcome these bad feelings.

During the stay, I’ve learned about the Malaysian culture when attending assessments and charity events, as well as interacting with the local people. They gave me the chance to truly see many aspects of the Malaysian community and to discover different ways of volunteering.

It was very meaningful for me to be able to assist others, regardless of how much it impacted me. It was also very nice for me to get a chance to share more about my country Tunisia and its culture with people who don’t know much about them.

These six weeks were so memorable it makes me very sad that we have to leave soon, but I feel grateful to everyone who have made this experience very enjoyable. I’m thankful for your kindness and warm gestures in making everything much easier.

Although it’s true that I am halfway across the world in a different continent, it feels like home here.

TCM Service In GHCC

I am thankful to Great Heart Charity Association for giving me a chance to provide Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services for more than two and half years at Great Heart Community Centre.

Here, TCM services are catered mainly to underprivileged communities, namely low-income household individuals, lonely elderly, jobless people, and person with disabilities. Compared to the ordinary advantageous groups, they are living in relatively poorer conditions for various reasons, hence it’s quite difficult for them to cope with the society.

Some of the patients, who have been suffering from chronic illness for many years, have come to GHCA for treatment out of economic consideration. The fact that these patients can receive Chinese medicine treatment such as pulse diagnosis, acupuncture, Tuina massage, and cupping at such a comfortable treatment place goes to show that GHCA’s contribution cannot be ignored.

Being a TCM medical practitioner, I feel my own pressure in carrying out this social responsibility, but I’m confident that I can unleash my own strengths by doing something more practical for these underprivileged groups. I couldn’t be prouder of this.

Makes My Day

Today’s activity continues from last week’s Hope Reading Program, which was jointly organised by Great Heart Charity and Sin Chew Daily. Our main objective is to assist the children in reading books they have previously bought at bookstore.

As information technology is becoming sophisticated and we often gets glued to our own gadgets, I’m very glad that today I have got an opportunity to use again dictionaries that I have nearly forgotten about.

That said, being able to interact with the children during this activity truly makes my day!

A Valuable Lesson

It has been a while since I volunteered for Great Heart Charity in delivering milk powder to Dayanidhi. I was happy to be able to assist his mother Kalaivahni in finding a sponsor to provide him with diapers, helping to ease her family’s financial burden.

Kalaivahni’s perseverance to look after her family makes me realize how great a mother’s love is. I have also witnessed how Dayanidhi changed from an unhappy abused boy to a cheerful one.

I am truly thankful to Great Heart Charity for granting us an opportunity to spend some time with Kalaivahni and her children to do meaningful and learning activities. From this, it gives me and my family a valuable lesson about receiving and giving in life.

From Germany With Love

It was a grateful moment to have the opportunity to support Great Heart Charity Organisation in Malaysia. From the experience, I have learned a lot about their local culture and seen how important it is to assist other people who are in unfortunate conditions.

While at Great Heart, I visited several kindergartens to show the children the importance of teeth brushing as well as providing them with donated food. I got in touch with underprivileged families to help them improving their lives.

Besides that, I have organised a fun trip bringing a group of underprivileged children to visit an animal farm and also plantations. I also helped to collect donations for Great Heart during dinner at a local Chinese temple in Klang.

From these volunteering programs, I met a lot of nice people whom I have taken into my heart. It was a wonderful experience in Great Heart and I wish I could have stayed longer. I am very thankful for this amazing and unforgettable time there!

A Word From Cabel Project

As someone who is working together with Great Heart for more than a year, I’m glad that they have provided me with a platform to help out underprivileged people as well as learning how to assess their situation in an appropriate manner.

This is a good thing because not only it allows us to continue assist those needy, but also trains me up ways to find those family who are in dire need of social and financial assistance.

Great Heart has always supported my vision in doing charity work. They have given me the flexibility to assist people on my own terms. At the same time, they never said no to my request to assist an underprivileged family for as long as there are valid reasons to do it.

Overall, I get to help more people ever since I got support from Great Heart in doing charity work. Can you imagine if I was doing all these tasks alone? I might not have sustained this much longer.

By knowing that Great Heart is supporting my effort, this will help continue my commitment towards serving something good for the community!
